Slope Stability 2026: the history of the symposium arriving in Peru

There is one place where the global geotechnical community gathers around a single question: how to keep a slope stable. That place is Slope Stability. In October 2026, it takes place in Lima.

Nearly two decades of trajectory

The first volume of proceedings in the series dates from 2007. Since then, the symposium has travelled through the world’s major mining regions. Vancouver, Canada, in 2011. Brisbane, Australia, in 2013. Seville, Spain, in 2018. Perth, Australia again, in 2020, an edition held entirely in remote format due to the pandemic.

Each edition consolidated the same role. Bringing together researchers, operators and engineers around the discipline that governs the safety of any open pit operation.

The scientific origin

The technical weight of the event has an identifiable root. The symposium is organised under the Large Open Pit Project, a global research initiative created in 2005 to deepen understanding of failure mechanisms in mining slopes.

That project produced the Guidelines for Open Pit Slope Design, published by Read and Stacey in 2009. The work remains the most cited normative reference in mining geotechnics. Anyone designing a slope today, on any continent, works on foundations that passed through it.

In Lima, the LOP is joined by the support of the Sociedad Peruana de Geoingeniería and the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Perú.

Why Lima, why now

The 2026 edition marks the first time the symposium takes place in Peru. The dates are 26 to 29 October.

The choice follows direct geographic logic. Global copper production is concentrated along the Peru and Chile axis. Bringing the event to Lima means bringing it closer to the operations that depend most on continuous geotechnical monitoring, at a moment of deeper mining and shorter decision cycles.

According to Luis Tejada, chair of the organising committee, the current price environment pushes both countries to share resources and knowledge to ensure safety, efficiency and sustainability.

A new format

SS2026 introduces a four-day structure. The programme combines technical paper presentations, keynote lectures and high-density short courses on geotechnics and hydrogeology applied to mining operations.

The topics on the agenda span the entire chain. Blasting. Pore pressure. Fault trees. Radar monitoring. Predictive analysis. Data integration and convergence.

This edition pays tribute to Dr John Read, one of the LOP pioneers, who passed away in 2024. Peru was where he carried out his final technical consultancy.

What Intelltech does in this context

And the intellectual lineage of the event, tracing back to the Guidelines and John Read’s work, sustains the same conviction that has guided Intelltech’s work from the start.
